These Are a Few of My Favorite Recently Popular Names

Every year we add the latest newly popular names to 100,000+ Baby Names, so people considering them for use can look them up and learn about their meaning and origin. Specifically, we add names which have gained enough popularity to be added to the Social Security Administration’s lists of the 1,000 most popular boys’ and girls’ names.

Many of the newly popular names are new variations of names already on the list, such as Lorelai, a variation of Lorelei. Some are familiar only to people who watch  certain TV shows, like Khaleesi, a name popularized by “Game of  Thrones”. (Needless to say, the problem with names like Lorelai and Khaleesi is that they are often difficult to spell and/or pronounce.)

Some newly popular names are place names, like Maylasia and Ireland. Some are the last names of celebrities and athletes, like Anniston, Lennon and Beckham. And some are combinations of two names that just sound good together, like Lillyana.

Just for fun, I thought you might enjoy a quick look at some of the most appealing newly popular names I’ve come across over the last few years. However, instead of giving you the precise origins and meanings I use in my book, I’ll just mention the reason I think some of these names might be of interest.

Beckham (the last name of an English soccer star)

Names That Are Cool Right Now–In June ’14 vs. May ’14

Here’s a list of names that are cool right now. Why is that important? Because names that were cool last year may come across as “stale” or “dated” now. That’s why I add new names for testing on our Ranker.com interactive site. Just click on the links to vote for the names you like best. That way, your friends and relatives will get the benefit of your judgment when you suggest they visit to “shop for” names that are cool right now.

I’ve taken the voting results and quantified them to improve on the raw scores reported by Ranker so names that have been added recently have a fair chance to be considered on an equal basis with names that were added last year.

Because I keep adding and testing new names, you’re a lot more likely to find names that are cool right now on my Ranker Interactive lists than anywhere else. So take a look at the changes since I published the results on May 5, 2014.

Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler Pick Rapidly-Rising Name for Son, Jaxon Wyatt

When the 2012 Social Security Administration popularity data was published, one of fastest-rising tends I noticed was the use of the letter “x” to give boys’ names a macho vibe.

Now Kristin Cavallari and husband Chicago Bears QB, Jay Cutler, have named their second son Jaxon Wyatt–giving their baby boy a middle name that is ranked #6 on my latest “Cool Names for Boys” interactive list to go with the strong first name. Wyatt adds the image of “pistol-packin” sheriff Wyatt Earp to a given name that sports an macho “x” right smack dab in the middle.

When I wrote a post about the name (Camden) that Cavallari and Cutler picked for their first son, back in 2012, I published some of her baby naming advice—which she offered at the time. Her number one tip had to do with picking a name that sounds good when you put the first, middle and last names all together. How do you think Jaxon Wyatt Cutler sounds? Sounds pretty good to me. But a three-syllable middle name (like Jaxon Remington Cutler) would have given it a more interesting and impressive sound, in my opinion. Use the link above to check out Cavallari’s other baby-naming tips.

I want to thank Mark Konkol of WDNA Talk Radio in Chicago for tipping me off to this story. This is the article he sent me to call my attention to Jaxon Wyatt Cutler and get my top-of mind comments by phone.

Names That Are Cool Right Now: February 2014

Here’s a list of names that are cool right now, as of 2/26/14. Why is that important? Because names that were cool last year may come across as “stale” or “dated” now. I keep generating new names for testing on our Ranker.com interactive site.

When I started this list, I included names I found on Nameberry and The Art of Naming. I also generated some names myself. I’m keeping track of the source of each name so you can see how I’m doing. For a while I seemed to have a better “vibe” for finding cool for girls than cool for boys. That’s changing as new votes are cast my latest picks for boys start panning out.

Because I keep adding and testing new names, you’re a lot more likely to find names that are cool right now on my Ranker Interactive lists than anywhere else.

Owen Wilson Reveals the Name of his Second Baby Boy, Finn Lindqvist Wilson: The Backstory

Nardine Saad of the Los Angeles Times had to do a little digging to come up with the backstory of Owen Wilson’s latest birth announcement. The actor known for scores of roles, including “The Internship” and “Cars 2”, and personal trainer, Caroline Lindquist, are the proud parents of Finn Lindqvist Wilson, who was born on January 30. The child’s name was discovered later, on Tuesday February 11.

Lindquist, the child’s Swedish mother, is going through a divorce and is quoted in the Daily Mail as saying,”Owen and I decided to have a child even though we’re not in a relationship. And we’re not planning on starting a relationship, either. Owen and I are two close friends having a baby together.” Apparently the Daily Mail got the story from the Swedish magazine Klick!.

Saad had fun with a possible connection between “Cars 2” and the name Finn: “And here we were, rooting for another automobile-inspired name for the “Cars 2” star’s love child. It’s unclear why the parents chose Finn, but we’re obliged to point out that several retro cars had fins, short for tailfins, including the Chevy Bel Air, Cadillac Coupe de Ville and, lest we forget, the Ford T-Bird. Just sayin’.”

I’m happy to point out that Finn is the #1 name on my interactive list of “Cool Names for Boys.” You don’t have to be a celebrity to “shop” there for cool names. (When you visit, feel free to vote for any names you like.)

You’ll be doing a big favor to other expecting couples looking for names that are cool right now.

If you’re wondering about the sources listed, I started both lists with around 30 names gathered from two websites:  The Art of Naming and Nameberry. I added some names I thought were cool, too. I had a hunch that many of the “cool names” listed on other websites had gone stale and seemed dated.

For a while I seemed to have better intuition about where and how to find cool names for girls than I have about finding cool names for boys. But that’s starting to change. For the very first time, I have four names on the boys’ top ten. I’m starting to get a handle on where to look for new cool names that are going to move up the lists.

So visit our Ranker.com pages to find cool names for your next baby, and while you’re there help your online “neighbors” by voting for the coolest names and against names you think are losing their cool.
