It took Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem almost three weeks to announce the name of their baby daughter: Luna Encinas. (Luna means “moon” in Spanish; Encinas means “live oak and is Bardem’s paternal surname.)
Although Luna was born on Monday, July 22, the same day George Alexander Louis Windsor was born, the couple took their time about revealing the name of their second child. This reflects their strong desire for privacy with regard to family matters. Cruz explained: “I want…my kids…to grow up in a way that is as anonymous as possible.” That’s a refreshing change from the practice of certain American celebrities who seem to think there’s nothing wrong with exploiting their children for personal gain.
Getting back to Luna–you may recall that Uma Thurman gave her baby daughter five names; then 6 months later, she abandoned the mostly un-pronounceable list of names she’d concocted and decided to call her daughter Luna. I thought Thurman made an excellent choice (the second time around). And for the same reasons, I think Cruz and Bardem have chosen wisely as well. Luna is a charming name that is both uncommon and memorable.
Two thumbs up for the name and the firm decision to keep family matters private.
I strongly suggest you click on the link to the Daily Mail article, which includes lots of photos of Cruz and Bardem taken just before Luna’s birth.
