Recently, I was asked by a TV reporter, “What do you think Brangelina will name their baby?” As if I know.
For those of you who aren’t aware, “Brangelina” is what the gossip columnists call Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. What gossip writers and editors may not know is that combining both parents’ names into a doubly ridiculous name is a hot baby-naming trend.
When I visited a school in Maryland a few months ago, I autographed a poetry book for a girl named “Carlinda.” When I asked her how she got that name, she answered, “My dad’s name is Carl and my mom’s name is Linda.” Soon thereafter, I met a girl named Marylen. When I asked her where that name came from, she responded, “My mother’s name is Mary and my father’s name is Len.” Two girls in one school with silly-sounding names that resulted from parental ego trips.
Now that we know that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes named their daughter Suri, I suppose we should be thankful that they didn’t name her TomKat.
